Shirley Riddick is insightsoftware’s general manager for APAC, responsible for all client-centric services and operations in region. Shirley has worked around the world bringing business problems and IT solutions together, and believes CALUMO’s product, team, and vision will be a valuable addition to insightsoftware’s suite of solutions. And when she’s not busy with all of that, she’s an aspiring triathlete!

How did you come to be working at insightsoftware?

I studied business and computer science at university in South Africa and joined Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) as a graduate doing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations. Having cut my teeth with Oracle, I wanted to explore SAP, and I went to London to work as a business analyst at ExxonMobil. I then moved back to South Africa to do consulting work that focused on financial modelling, budgeting, and planning.

But there’s only so many timesheets you can fill out before you get sick of consulting — I was looking for a different opportunity, and so I joined a small startup called Excel4Apps. I spent over a decade there growing the business, doing every role you could think of, from sales to marketing to events. I worked as the tea lady, I worked in the travel office, you name it. In my time at Excel4Apps, we scaled the company from ten customers to about 1500, which is when we were acquired by insightsoftware.

Acquisitions bring opportunity, and within a few months of integrating into insightsoftware, I was offered the role of sales director in Sydney. I was made general manager at the start of 2021.

You’ve worked in the business intelligence and ERP space for almost twenty years, is there something about this industry that particularly interests you?

There certainly is! I absolutely love problem solving and, for me, the work we do at insightsoftware is all about bringing business problems and IT solutions together. I enjoy the challenge of developing strategies that make things better, easier, optimized, faster. I’ve seen the pitfalls of ERPs firsthand, and so I’ve found it very rewarding to work with insightsoftware’s suite of solutions, which can plug in and fills those gaps directly. We solve real business problems here.

As the general manager for the APAC region, I oversee four offices—Perth, Singapore, Sydney, and Wellington—as well as a host of remote operations. The three main areas that roll up to me in region are professional services, sales, and client care and support. Being responsible for everything client-centric in APAC is the perfect position for bringing together business problems and insightsoftware’s solutions. I love being in a role that is so involved in all areas of the business and allows me to exert real change and growth.

When you’re not overseeing four offices and a host of remote operations, how do you spend your time? How does the insightsoftware culture fit into all of this?

I’m very family oriented and I love the outdoors. I spend a lot of time running and cycling, and I’ve recently added swimming to my disciplines. It’s been difficult to train during the Sydney lockdown, but I’m working towards a triathlon early next year.

I love that insightsoftware is fast paced. There’s also huge room for growth—we offer training and opportunity for our staff to find a role that suits them. Our studies reimbursement scheme encourages our people to learn, pivot, and contribute to the business in new and interesting ways. I also enjoy the acquisitive nature of insightsoftware. It enables us to make key strategic moves in the market, which has been an enjoyable challenge.

Speaking of insightsoftware’s acquisitive nature, how do you see CALUMO fitting in to the solution stack?

We decided to acquire CALUMO because we could see it offered an industry-leading product in the budgeting and planning space, one that was supported by a very strong professional services team. insightsoftware wanted to actively build its presence in Australia, and CALUMO was a great company to bring into our suite of products.

There’s a really strong alignment of values and vision here—both companies are always aiming to make the lives of finance professionals, and CFOs in particular, better, easier, and optimized. With CALUMO now plugged into our established partner network and sales organization, the customers of both companies will have access to a wider range of intelligent business solutions. I’m excited to see the trajectories of both organizations continue upwards, together.
